Period 9 runs from 4 February 2024 to 3 February 2044. A building completed or substantially renovated on or after 4 February 2024 is a Period 9 building. Everything finished before that date keeps the period it was built in, however recently it was decorated.
Period 8 ran for the twenty years to 3 February 2024, and through all of it star 8 was the timely star — the number practitioners worked to strengthen. From 4 February 2024 the timely number is 9.
The change is to which numbers are read as timely, not to the method and not to any existing building's chart. A house built in 2010 has the same Period 8 chart today that it had in 2023. What changed is the background the chart is read against, and the yearly numbers that move through it.
A great deal of writing about flying star feng shui was published during Period 8 and still describes the current period as running from 2004 to 2024, with 8 as the timely star. That was correct when it was written. It is two periods' worth of reading out of date now.
At Li Chun 立春, the start of spring in the Chinese solar calendar, not on 1 January. This matters more than it sounds. A building completed in January 2024 is Period 8, not Period 9, because January 2024 still belongs to the solar year that began in February 2023.

Find the date the building was completed, then read it off the table above. Three points decide most cases.
Completion, not purchase. The date the building was finished is the one that counts, not the date you moved in or bought it. For an apartment, it is the date the block was completed.
Substantial renovation can reset it. Work that strips a building back and renews it — roof off, walls out, services replaced — starts a new period from the date it was finished. New kitchen cabinets, paint and flooring do not. Practitioners differ on where the line falls, and a building sitting near it is a case for a consultant rather than a rule.
If you do not know the date, find it before guessing. The period sets every number in the chart, so a wrong period produces a chart that is wrong in all nine sectors. A title deed, a completion certificate or the local land registry will have the date.
Not by itself. The building's own chart is unchanged. What the new period changes is which of its numbers are read as timely and which have gone quiet, and that is a reading rather than a repair. A sector carrying star 8 has not become a problem; it has stopped being the strongest card in the hand.
A floor plan cannot show everything: the land, the surroundings, the people. For important decisions, an experienced practitioner’s eye is worth having.
From the completion date you enter, on the solar calendar, using the boundaries in the table above. The period then sets the centre number of the chart, and the direction the entrance faces sets how the mountain and water stars fly from it. Those two inputs fix all nine sectors, which is why the same building entered by any two consultants produces the same chart.
The dates on this page are read from the same code the app uses, so the table and the chart cannot disagree.
These notes follow traditional flying star practice and describe the feel of a space. They are not medical, legal or financial advice, and they are not predictions about any particular person.
The period is one of the two inputs that fix a building's chart. The other is the direction its entrance faces. Give Flying Stars both and it works out the nine sectors and fits them to your floor plan.
