Flying star feng shui: questions and answers

What a flying star chart is, how Flying Stars turns one into room-by-room advice, and how that differs from a chart calculator or an AI chat.

How Flying Stars compares

Most flying star tools fall into one of two kinds. Here is what each usually does, beside what Flying Stars does.

The method

What is flying star feng shui?

Flying star feng shui (Xuan Kong Fei Xing) is a classical school of feng shui that reads a building by time as well as direction. From the building's facing bearing and the period it was built or renovated in, nine numbers are placed in each of nine sectors of the floor plan: a mountain star, a water star and a period star. How those numbers meet in each sector is what the method reads.

Which period does it use?

The period is worked out from the completion or renovation date on the solar calendar. A building completed from 4 February 2024 onwards falls in Period 9, which runs until 3 February 2044. Older buildings keep the period they were built in unless they have been substantially renovated.

Does it use my kua number?

Yes. From each resident's birth date and gender it works out their kua number and their four best and four weaker directions (Eight Mansions). These are weighed alongside the flying stars when a bed or desk is placed, so the advice suits the person using the room as well as the room itself.

Flying Stars and other tools

How is Flying Stars different from a flying star calculator?

A calculator draws the chart and stops there. Flying Stars draws the same chart, fits its nine sectors to your own floor plan, and then goes room by room: where the bed, desk, cooker and seats go, weighing the stars, each resident's personal directions and the shape of the room, with the reason for every wall chosen or ruled out, in a report you can reword.

How is it different from asking an AI chat for feng shui advice?

A chat gives general tips and can answer differently each time you ask. Flying Stars calculates the chart from your building's bearing and date by the classical method, so the same building always gives the same chart and the same advice, and every recommendation can be traced back to the numbers.

Using it

What do I need to start?

Three things: a compass reading taken standing inside the front door looking out, the date the building was completed or last substantially renovated, and a floor plan as a picture or a PDF. Birth dates of the people who live or work there are optional and add their personal directions.

Does it work for offices and shops?

Yes. Choose a commercial project instead of a home and the readings are written for a business, with the areas of the plan read for the head of the business, the managers, finance, sales, reception and the other roles, and the report worded for an office rather than a household.

Is it made for consultants or for my own home?

Both. Consultants use it to prepare a client study quickly and reword any line of the report before handing it over. Homeowners use the same steps on their own plan, and every recommendation says why, so nothing is left to guesswork.

What does it not do?

It reads the building from its floor plan, so it cannot see the land, the surroundings or the people. It does not add the yearly or monthly stars, and it does not draw a replacement-star chart: when a bearing sits within 1.5 degrees of a mountain boundary it tells you to measure again. It is not fortune-telling and makes no promise about health, money or relationships. For important decisions, an experienced practitioner's eye is worth having.

Plans, devices and privacy

What does it cost?

The free plan covers the main floor plan, one room page, one resident and one saved report. Pro is US$19.99 a month or US$99.99 a year and adds every room and resident, furniture on the plan, the report in your own words, unlimited reports and a library of projects. You can cancel at any time and Pro stays on until the end of the period you have paid for.

Where does it run?

In any web browser at flyingstarsfengshui.net/app. On Windows it is in the Microsoft Store as an installed app. On iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android and Chromebook, install the web app from the browser and it opens like any other app. Your projects are kept in your account, so they open on any device you sign in to.

What happens to my clients' details?

Floor plans, names and birth dates are kept in your account so your projects open on your other devices, and each project can only be read by the account that made it. Deleting a project removes them, and you can delete your whole account from inside the app.
