Kua number calculator

Last updated

Your kua number comes from your birth date and whether you are male or female. Enter both below and the calculator gives your number, your group, and your four best and four weaker directions, worked out by the same code as the Flying Stars app.

The calculation differs for men and women

How is the kua number worked out?

From the solar year you were born in. Flying Stars follows these steps:

  1. Find the solar year. The solar year begins at Li Chun, which Flying Stars takes as 4 February. A birth before 4 February counts as the year before.
  2. Add the last two digits of that year, and keep adding until one digit is left.
  3. Apply the rule for your birth year and gender. Born before 2000: a man takes 10 minus that digit, a woman takes 5 plus it. Born in 2000 or later: a man takes 9 minus it, a woman takes 6 plus it.
  4. Reduce the answer to one digit. A 0 becomes 9.
  5. If the answer is 5, change it. 5 has no direction of its own, so a man takes 2 and a woman takes 8.

Example: a woman born on 20 January 1980.

  1. Born 20 January 1980 — before Li Chun, so the solar year is 1979, not 1980.
  2. Last two digits of 1979 = 79, digits sum to 7.
  3. Female born before 2000: 5 + 7 = 12.
  4. Kua 3 -> East group person.

The January birth matters here. Taken as 1980, the same woman would come out as a 4. The solar year is what counts, and it had not yet turned.

What if I was born in early February?

Check the exact date with care. The solar year turns at Li Chun, which falls on 3, 4 or 5 February depending on the year. Flying Stars takes 4 February, and for a birth on 3, 4 or 5 February the app says plainly that the date sits right where the year turns over, rather than guessing. The calculator above does the same.

What does each kua number's set of directions look like?

Every kua number has four best directions and four weaker ones. These are the names the app uses for them; the calculator above also gives the classical Chinese name for each.

The first four columns are the four best directions; the last four, the weaker ones. Names as the app uses them.

The names are the traditional ones. They describe what each direction is said to support, not a promise about any person.

What are the East and West groups?

Kua numbers 1, 3, 4 and 9 form the East group, and 2, 6, 7 and 8 the West group. People in the same group share the same four best directions, in a different order.

The East group covers numbers 1, 3, 4 and 9. People in the same group share the same set of good directions, so they are easy to arrange a home around together. Where a household is split across both groups, the shared rooms are the ones worth getting right.

How do I use my best directions at home?

Two ways, and both are about which way you point, not where you are:

Where you sit and which way you face count separately. A person in a weaker part of a room can still face a good direction, and that is often how a room that cannot be rearranged is made to work.

Is my kua number enough to arrange a room?

No. In a flying star study, your personal directions come second. The numbers that fall in each part of the room come first: they describe the space itself, and the most serious combinations rule a wall out on their own. Your directions then choose between the parts of the room that are already sound. They never rescue one that is not.

The room adds its own rules too. The app never puts a headboard against a wall shared with a toilet or a bathroom, or a bed with the feet pointing out of the door, while another wall is free. A birth date cannot tell you any of that. The floor plan, the building's facing direction and the date it was built can.

Does it matter if a household is split across both groups?

The West group covers numbers 2, 6, 7 and 8. People in the same group share the same set of good directions, so they are easy to arrange a home around together. Where a household is split across both groups, the shared rooms are the ones worth getting right.

The app works this out room by room. When two people share a bed, it leans towards the person a wall suits least, so a wall that is ideal for one partner and poor for the other is not passed off as fair.

These notes follow traditional flying star practice and describe the feel of a space. They are not medical, legal or financial advice, and they are not predictions about any particular person.

Your directions are half of it. The other half is the flying stars of each room, and the app weighs those first. See where your bed and desk should go on your own floor plan.
